When you are the administrator of a Ning network, you can go into the manage tab and then the "add premium services" are to use a custom URL. You'll have to buy a domain name and then follow the instructions given. Ning changes $4.95/month to have a custom domain name.
I just created a separate account for the network creator, as you guessed. It doesn't link to my regular account. But I didn't want to draw attention to myself by having me be the creator of the network.
