Driving Questions

Deep Learning is 650 feet down

Ever meet someone who is totally passionate about their work? My friend Linda Schmitt is such a person and as director of the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, she’s creating passion in young learners every day! In this tour of the museum, we explore the museum and the many teaching and learning opportunities that wait beneath our feet.

About Me:
To have spent so much of my life in education has been a wondrous thing. I am so fortunate to have a career that encourages me to spend all of my time helping educators find new and innovative ways to help learners prepare for their futures. My work with charter schools helps keep me on the cutting edge, both with technology and educational philosophy. To meet the needs of today’s educators I have to be a constant learner and I see my role as being the person who is granted the time that schools don’t have to learn things and bring them to them in a way they can use. I can think of no better way to spend a lifetime!

Keynote on Tuesday

I'm watching the keynote and being inspired by these two teachers who do connecting projects with their kids to the world. The stories are the stuff of buy in and the kinds of inspirations that go for the heart in educators. These "conversational lubricants" are in my view the essential elements that start and maintain a movement.

EduBloggerCon Rocked!

It's over for another year and that makes me sad but Steve and the crew did an outstanding job of allowing good friends who've never met in person to get together and stretch their thinking. I met amazing people and had time to really talk. I am grateful for this ongoing opportunity and know that as it grows and evolves it will only get better.

I'm here!

It's a bit balmy with a chance of rain in San Antonio as I look out my hotel room window and possibility is in the air. In a little bit I will shuttle over to the conference center for edubloggercon and I will see and talk to some of the people I respect for their thinking as well as their contributions to positive educational change. I hope to have some amazing conversations!

Springs Alive (SPA) is the registered Name of our Organization, registered with the Registrar of Companies in the Ministry of Justice-Uganda. The Organization is also registered with Wakiso District Administration-Community Development Office; as a CBO (Community Based Organization); Reg.No.WCBO/934/06.

We are located in Sebbi-Lugeye village,Kakiri Sub County in Wakiso District, about 2km off Kampala-Hoima Road at 22Kms(Kikubampanga).

Our Vision is to improve the quality of life and services of people where duty calls, through the philosophy of partnership, consultation, research, voluntarisms, local contributions as well as participatory action by stake holders; which is needed to enable the service receivers get satisfaction from effective, efficient and affordable service delivery.

Springs Alive’s existence is a result of having found and actually seen that there was great need for social services by the people in the community of sebbi-lugeye where the organization’s headquarters are based. This initiative is driven by the needs of the population of this community and when fully operational, the benefits of the facilities of the organization will be visible in the communities of North Busiro constituency in Wakiso District (Uganda) and beyond.

SPA came up to join other organizations and close the gap between government and the people at the grass roots. SPA has be described as a good gesture (only needing to be developed and/or supported, given its catchment area i.e. a war zone formerly known as Luweero Triangle-since 1986) that has resulted out of consultancy, reseach and voluntarism, as well as contributions from people locally.

The population which needs SPA services is well over 1,000 people with around 300 households in its immediate neighborhood. This has mainly been brought about by the government’s Decentralization of responsibilities from the center to the lower centers of responsibilities and this has created a lot of need for efficient, effective and affordable service delivery.

The Organization was motivated by the desire to improve the Quality of life and believes in participatory action by stakeholders to respond to any call for effective, efficient and affordable service delivery. At present the Organization deems it necessary that it should try as much as possible to tackle the area of:

i. Provision of psychosocial support for Children in the category of Needy, abandoned, Orphans and Vulnerable and to date there are 100 of these children that have been incorporated in the early child care and development center based at the Springs Alive HQ’s mentioned above.
ii. Empowering out of school children in the above categories with vocational life skills to help them earn a living.
iii. Looking for affordable means to sustainably cater for the children.
iv. Strengthening these Children’s Bodies and minds in a healthy way.

The above given areas SPA regards as priority number one although the Organization has a wide range of areas which it would wish to operate. This is quite difficult to achieve at ago and that’s why it is important to plan and carry out activities according to plans. The other areas of Operation would be; establishment of vocational institutions to provide technical knowledge for jobs creation, capacity building in the area of poverty eradication, voluteer services, Encouraging adult literacy, supplement formal education and other many areas not forgetting primary health care and curative health services.

Despite the fact that SPA is trying to lift up the standards of these children, these children lack clothings, some have no where to sleep, others having guardians are not able to pay for them school fees, cannot get a meal, no treatment and what they can afford is only staying with these children. Those who finish Primary Seven in many cases fail to continue because they cannot manage to pay for any further studies, they resort to bad behaviors like engaging bad groups, smoking marijuana etc. It’s been noted that Child survival within this area leaves a lot to be desired and this was &/or is mainly brought about by wide spread HIV/AIDS, the occurrence of the 1986 bush war, Early marriages, biting poverty, illiteracy and backwardness as a result of poor &/or unserious backgrounds.

SPA lacks safe learning environment, safe water, a counselor who can help these children feel at home and have a sense of belonging in the community, playing utilities e.g. a Swing, a Health outreach programme, a House for the children who are totally helpless at SPA children’s Centre etc.SPA has not grown to the level of renown to capably reach the many cases often presented but is determined to respond to the increasing demands.

The purpose of this communication therefore is to inform you to become partners with us in this work and also put to use any opportunity that may be available in order to tackle these children’s plight, we also hope that if we get somewhere with this collaboration, we will be in position to update you of what transpires later, now that we will have regarded you as one of our trustees.

OTHER AREAS IN WHICH WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT INCLUDE;
• Training in Income generation for vulnerable families to be given affordable opportunities to own land, practice modern agriculture,
• In having shelter for both survival and development in Ssebi-Lugeye community with the help of some of the programs you are carrying out.
• To introduce us to development partners who are willing to work with us and find out about what we are doing.
• In popularizing our cause as per Springs Alive’s call to willing parties.

We are of the hope that if we can collaborate in this instance, we will be given great encouragement to be able to interact at a greater extent in order to reach the population that needs this type of service even as our constitution attached stipulates.

Hoping for a positive response
