This was my first time attending the NEC Conference and I had a blast! I connected with some amazing people and look forward to collaborating with them in the future! My Student Showcase was a hit, and I was thrilled that Vikki Myers, Senior Multimedia Producer for Professional Growth at Pearson, interviewed my student and me in regards to the impact of technology in the classroom. I look forward to getting that video clip to showcase on here and at my school. What an awesome experience!!! Delet… Continue

San Antonio Airport, Thursday, 11:20 a.m.
Free WiFi Internet Access at the airport! Fully functional. Now that is how it should be done. In the modern world, air, water and wifi should be free. I am really liking this town.
In a discussion last night we came to the conclusion that the Riverwalk does have an artificiality that some will find disturbing, but it is still delightfully done. I took multiple strolls which started right at the door to my hotel. I never found time for a boat trip or to… Continue

Wednesday, July 2, 11:20 pm (with edits Thursday morning in the airport)
Long post, with the unbelievable part at the end.
Started the day, as each day here in San Antonio, with coffee and croissant from the Starbucks in the lobby. Rather nice, really.
First presentation, Second Life with Distance Learners: Virtual Office Hours. The presenter, Abbie Brown of East Carolina University, described his experiences in Second Life, asking if ours were similar. In my… Continue

Just saw an awesome math session. Scott Loomis gave some wonderful real world applications for integrating technology into middle school math classes. I cannot say enough about this session! I learned so much! I am going to stop in and purchase his book before I leave. He and his wife have books for 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6-8th grade. Continue
What most teachers want is technology that supports the objectives they are trying to achieve or possibly solve a problem provided that the technology doesn’t dramatically change their work flow. Well, that’s what Hal Davidson presented today, It’s in your pocket: Teaching spectacularly with cell phones,

Hotel radio alarm has four preset radio stations and no other tuner. The four presets are silence, static, Christian talk radio not quite tuned in correctly and some sort of music of the weird. Of course, I was a few minutes late.. But she’s so organized to catch me up. First, Kathy discussed her use of Adobe Connect briefly being an Adobe Education leader which gets her free use of software provided she leads workshops in Adobe tools. This sounds similar to being a Google educator except that Google apps are FREE and I guess the advantage is you get to continue to use them free? Still, if you’ve used Adobe’s apps. What can you say? They work so darn well.

The title said "Energize your classroom with Google tools" by Cristin Frodella & Andrew Chang
Supposedly, we were going to get a tour of examples of the most innovative uses of Google tools. Instead, they told us why Google docs was formed (a need for more colloborative work and shring), the basics of what each of the tools do, e.g, spreadsheets, docs, presentations, etc. Boring if you already know that.
In terms of their presentation, I think they underestimated their audience. Instead, t… Continue

It has been an eventful start to NECC so far. There is lots of information to process and remember when I return to the real world of MOREnet.
The day started out at a CoSN sponsored event on Digital Media and the role of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The meeting was well attended. I don’t think CoSN was expecting an audience of about 80-100 people.
The session started with the panelists discussing their situations with technology. A very bright group of people with lots of experience in… Continue

Ian provided a very interesting and informative research-based session. He covered a lot in one hour. Here's what I captured.
We are not the same as our students!
Digital is a second language
• The brains of the digital world natives are physiologically wired differently than those of pre-digital native times.
• At birth the brain is only 50% wired. The rest of the wiring occurs as we grow… and can change. This is backed up by research!
Ian’s main points:
• New scanning models allow new looks… Continue

Well, It's nice to see such cheery folks again here at NECC 08. So many people and vendors and lots of things to visit. Too bad that most of the BYOL sessions require that you stand in line 40-45 minutes ahead of time to get a seat. The "Oodles of Google" workshop pointed out how far the open-source/free/web-based apps have come in a short time. The Google tools really focus on collaboration and anywhere-anytime access.
