Energy costs stimulus to innovate?

Will higher energy costs be a stimulus for U.S. K-12 schools and state boards of education to look at and sanction genuine innovations in teaching and learning besides just working on adjusting budgets to cover the increase costs?

What do you hear from your district or governing state board of education?

How 'Disruptive Innovation' Will Change the Way We Learn (or will they?)

http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2008/06/04/39christensen_ep.h27.html?tmp=630870772

By Clayton M. Christensen, Michael B. Horn, & Curtis W. Johnson

The authors write, "The way to implement an innovation so that it will transform an organization is to implement it disruptively—not by using it to compete against the existing paradigm and serve existing customers, but to target those not being served or not buying what’s served."

"If the goal is to educate every student to the highest poten… Continue

The growth of the extended conference.

What a difference a year makes. NECC 08 promises to usher in a vast array of tools to meet the multiple needs of NECC attendees, past, present and future. Some past attendees cannot come to San Antonio, but can participate in a variety of virtual events before, during and after the conference. Attendees to 2008's conference will use an unprecedented number of tools to make NECC overflow with opportunities both formal and informal; from the EduBloggerCon to the "Unplugged" to the impromptu, self-… Continue

Gordon,
I have found out that the discussion I referred to in my last post will be held on the second floor, Second Life lounge - next to where the band played Saturday night. If you could join us, that would be great, since we have decided to hold an in-world demo discussion to show those in attendance the possibilities of SL for administrators. You could be there in both RL and SL - which would be great! BTW, here is the program that Mark is serving as a consultant for and is a member of: http://education.jhu.edu/otherspecializations/iste/ Would be great to see you there! Thanks.

Hi Gordon,
Hope you are having fun at NECC. I have sent out Iowametaversening all-call to as many Iowans as I could find here. Also, I have been invited to assist in a discussion with Mark Arnold who is there in RL and I will be in-world on Tuesday at 11. Would be wonderful if you could drop by. The discussion topic can be found here: http://plannecc2008.iste.wikispaces.net/Second+Life
The meeting in SL will be at the ISTE bandshell and the RL meeting in one of the lounges - don't know which one yet, I will find out tonight and can let you know. Mark is also a member of the 2008-2009 Johns Hopkins University & ISTE School Administration and Supervision program. A description of that program can be found here: http://education.jhu.edu/otherspecializations/iste/
I am sure your schedule is packed, but I think you would find Mark to be a man very worth getting to know.

Hi Gordon,
I would like to put an all-call out to all Iowa educators here to join a new ning recently created by Dan Power, UNI business professor and creator of Iowa on Second Life. Here is the link: http://iowametaverse.ning.com/ Dan commments: "The Iowametaverse ning includes photos, discussion board, hopefully videos, mashups ...
If you are an Iowan, a friend of an Iowan or former Iowan and are in Second Life or want to be, join my Ning. It is open for viewing. Will the Ning help in making decisions and building the Second Life Iowa community? I think so. More later as the experiment continues." Dan's ning seems to be a good central meeting place for us all. I would encourage all to join. And if you have not yet visited Iowa on SL, please do soon! It is developing wonderfully!
